H.K Century History

Hong Kong has supported human life since at least the Stone Age. Until the British claimed it, the area was a neglected corner of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The British took control of Hong Kong in 1841 following the Opium Wars. European trade with China had been taking place since the 16th century. The transfer of the sovereignty occurred at midnight on 01-07-1997. One striking fact about Hong Kong is that, physically, it is in so many ways a new city. The results have been spectacular, not only in the physical development of the territory, but also in the overall scale of its economy and the standard of living of its inhabitants. Now Hong Kong is a modern and thriving metropolis of about 7 million people, fully employed and much better housed. One of the major centres of world trade, communications and finance.

Upon arrival at Chek Lap Kok International Airport ( HKIA ) it is now possible to see how one of the world's largest buildings. passenger terminal building contract worth HK$10.1bn (US$1.29bn), and all were awarded within the overall budget for the works. The new airport will be the gateway to China and the whole of the international gateway to the Asia-Pacific Region. New airport opening in April 1998. The early opening of the airport, the passenger traffic will be up to 35 million passengers.

On 02-12-2007, the Rail Merger Ordinance came into effect. The Rail Merger Bill expressly empowers KCRC to grant service concession to MTRCL and expands the scope of MTRCL's franchise for taking up the operation of these KCRC's transport services. The franchise period would be re-set to 50 years from merger date. Upon the merger, MTRCL changes its Chinese name to ( 香港铁路有限公司 ) while retaining its English name.

The number of passengers using the electrified Kowloon - Canton Railway ( KCR ) between the towns of Sha Tin, Tai Po and Fanling and the urban area, as well as those traveling to and from China via Lou Wu increased significantly during the year.
